High Performance Glazing: Current Triple Glazed Options David Baylon, Ecotope Inc.

Introduction Triple glaze option developed in the early 1990s – Vinyl window frames “Super Windows” – Atrium Windows (the BestBuilt Windows plant in Yakima) introduced a triple glazed. Triple glazed U-value” 0.16 to 0.24 (depending on window package & Low-e configuration) Target price to general contractor (or Home Depot) $12.00/sf Incremental cost from Class 30 window: $2.00/sf – With installation mark-up $

Window Characteristics  Triple Glazing, Two layers of double strength, one layer of single strength  Low-e coating on one surface (5) or two (2,5)  Low-e either e=.21 or e=.04  Large difference in SHGC small difference in U- value  Argon fill  1.0” overall glazing section

Savings impact:  Two prototypes analyzed:  Weatherized retrofit,  New Construction  2200 sf prototype for both cases  EStar NWBOP standards,  Window U=0.22, SHGC=0.23

Gas Savings (90+ AFUE) 0.35 to to 0.22 ThTh/ft 2 ThTh/ft 2 Portland Seattle Spokane Boise Kalispell

Gas Savings

Heat Pump Savings 0.35 to to 0.22 kWhkWh / ft 2 kWhkWh / ft 2 Portland Seattle Spokane Boise Kalispell

Electric Heat Pump

Retrofit Gas Savings

Retrofit with Base Heat Pump

Cost Benefit  Using $2/sf, B/C from $0.10 avoided cost:  1.1 Portland  3.1 Kalispell  Break even at $3.00/sf for retrofit, $2.30 for new construction

Conclusions  Triple glazing technolgies are Cost- effective in the current market  Performance of the range of U=0.16 available  About half the values of our current codes and specs  Typical package U-Value ~U=0.22  SHGC can be about.40 with little loss in U- value  Lower emissivity reduces SHGC to ~.25
