Presentation transcript:

There are few men who hold the revere of so many, as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Perhaps this is because of their devout belief in Jesus Christ. They earned the respect and trust of the men under their command by leading with strength, tenactiy, bravery, as well as a Christian love that few other leaders were able to match at the time. Lee was known to pray for all things surrounding his life in battle, even the enemy. He would ride along his troops, stop and dismount so that he could hold a prayer with some of the men. This was a common sight to see in Lee and Jackson’s armies. The faith that Jackson held so dear lead him to seem almost fearlessness in battle and when asked about this he said: “ My Religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to always be ready, no matter when it may overtake me. This is the way all men should live, then all all would be equally brave.” The level of comfort and control that Jackson had when in battle that was brought on by his faith could have done nothing less than change his commanding style. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson’s Religious Life and Prayers

Lee used his faith in a very similar way to that of Jackson. He also used it to find comfort, but he used it to fortify himself as well as his troops in more of an overt tone than his counterpart. He was well known to pray with his men, pray for the South as a whole, as well as even praying for the enemy. Lee took great steps to bring his army closer to God and make them men of strong moral character. This all earned Lee incredible respect from people as far as Europe and as close home as the North. Many people still look to him as a role model in this regard because of how strong he was in his beliefs even while being in the midst of horrid atrocities towards his countrymen on both sides. during the war. “Help me to be, to think, to act what is right because it is right; make me truthful, honest, and honorable in all things; make me intellectually honest for the sake of right and honor and without thought of reward to me..”-Robert E. Lee These two leaders of Southern men during the Civil War and in Lee’s case, for years there after, were great men of moral character and Christian values that helped shaped character while under the most powerful stresses possible. Much of the time history tends to get caught up in the non-personal side of how events took place and not how much the strength of men like Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee changed history as we know it.
