Jesus Is Coming Again April 29

Think About It … What activity or event are you looking forward to in the next few weeks? Would you be able to say that you are looking forward to Christ’s return with as much anticipation as these events we listed? –  Most of our thoughts are fixated on the here and now. –  Today we consider the reality of Christ’s imminent return!

See the End Game Why do you like to watch a movie or the rerun of a TV show multiple times, even when you know how it comes out? Similarly with rereading books. – Consider that there are times when we know the end of the story and still appreciate the development of what happens – specifically the events of the end times. Listen for what Jesus says about His return.

Rev. 22:12-14 (NIV) "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. [13] I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. [14] "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.

See the End Game According to Jesus, when is He coming back? If that is so, why do you think believers don’t live with more of a sense of urgency? Verse 12 says that Jesus will return and “repay each person according to what he has done.” How should that impact how we live today? How did Jesus describe Himself?

See the End Game How do these descriptive words help assure you that Jesus is indeed coming again? Jesus said that those who “wash their robes” will be entitled to citizenship in the New Jerusalem. What does it mean to “wash your robes”?

Listen for how God is like a thief!! Matthew 24:39-44 (NIV) That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. [40] Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. [41] Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. [42] "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.

Listen for how God is like a thief!! [43] But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. [44] So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

See That You Are Ready What illustrations did Jesus use to show the suddenness of His return? What facts do we learn about thieves? So, then … how is God like a thief? What makes Jesus' return seem distant and unreal to many people?

See That You Are Ready What other events in your life have seemed distant and unreal and yet they have eventually taken place? As you anticipated Christmas or a visit by relatives or the end of school, how did it affect your day to day life? How would an alert believer live his or her life differently in anticipation of Christ's return? What is involved in getting ready?

Listen for Jesus warnings about unfaithfulness. Matthew 24:9-14 (NIV) "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. [10] At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, [11] and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

Listen for Jesus warnings about unfaithfulness. [12] Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, [13] but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. [14] And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Listen for Jesus warnings about unfaithfulness. Rev. 7:9 (NIV) After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.

See That You Are Faithful What various events did Jesus say would happen to believers in the end times? Where have we seen some of these events already happening? – Viet Nam Viet Nam – Syrian Christians Syrian Christians – Gay rights Gay rights

See That You Are Faithful In what kinds of situations are we tempted to let go of faithfulness and turn away from a relationship with God? What can you do to keep your love of the Lord not to “grow cold”, even in these kinds of situations?

Application When Christ comes again He will judge all people according to their works – No one can do works good enough in their own strength to be saved – People are saved by faith in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ – Allow God to accomplish “good works” through your life this week

Application The coming of the Lord is certain – the time is uncertain – We ought to be alert and ready no matter when He comes – Live your life as if Jesus was coming today – Continue serving Him as if He might not come in your lifetime

Application Christians will be and are persecuted – Those who hold on to the Truth will persevere unto the end – Ask God to help you demonstrate faithfulness that is a legacy of faithfulness for younger generations – your children, your grandchildren
