KING SAUL HISTORY : Israel was ruled by “Judges” for 325 years. “In those days Israel had no king, so the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes” Judges 17:6. During that time Israel was involved in many military conflicts with other nations, mainly the Philistines, and was getting beaten most of the time. The people got frustrated and wanted a king to rule over them. Samuel was both the prophet and judge at the time and knew that God was supposed to be the King of Israel and not any man. But the people continued to ask Samuel for a king to rule over them, “Look,” they told him, “you are old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king like all the other nations have.” 1 Samuel 8:5 Samuel asks God what to do and God tells Samuel to give the people a king, but warn them what will happen when a human king rules them, 1 Samuel 8:6-21

KING SAUL SAUL’S PROFILE : His dad (Kish) was rich, he was the most handsome man in Israel, and he was head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land. 1 Samuel 9:1-2.

yin KING SAUL SAUL’S BEGINNING God tells Samuel the first time he sees Saul that he is the man who will rule Israel. When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This is the man I spoke to you about; he will rule my people. 1 Samuel 9:17

SAUL’S BEGINNING Saul started out _________ Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why do you say such a thing to me? 1 Samuel 9:21 HUMBLE Saul gets ___________ by Samuel Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed you leader over his inheritance? 1 Samuel 10:1 ANOINTED

SAUL’S BEGINNING Saul is ___________ by God As Saul turned and started to leave, God changed his heart, and all Samuel’s signs were fulfilled that day. When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, they saw the prophets coming toward them. Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul, and he too, began to prophesy. When his friends heard about it, the exclaimed, “What, is Saul a prophet?” 1 Samuel 10:9-11 CHANGED Saul is ______ about what God has called him to do “Where in the world have you been?” Saul’s uncle asked him. “We went looking for donkeys,” Saul replied, “but we couldn’t find them. So we went to the prophet Samuel to ask him where they were. “Oh, what did he say?” his uncle asked. “He said the donkeys had been found”, Saul replied. TIMID

SAUL’S BEGINNING Saul is ___________ towards the people Then the people exclaimed to Samuel, “Now where are those men who said Saul shouldn’t rule over us? Bring them here, and we will kill them!” But Saul replied, “No one will be executed today, for the Lord has rescued Israel. 1 Samuel 11:12-14 MERCIFUL

The news spread quickly among the Philistines that Israel was in revolt, so Saul sounded the call to arms throughout Israel. He announced that the Philistine garrison at Geba had been destroyed, and he warned the people that the Philistines now hated the Israelites more than ever. So the entire Israelite army mobilized again and met Saul at Gilgal. 1 Samuel 13:3-4

SAUL’S REIGN The people begin to _______ Saul's leadership DOUBT When the men of Israel saw the vast number of enemy troops, they lost their nerve entirely and tried to hide in caves, holes, rocks, tombs, and cisterns. 1 Samuel 13:6-7 Saul begins to take matters _________________________ INTO HIS OWN HANDS So he demanded, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!” And Saul sacrificed the burnt offering himself. 1 Samuel 13:9

SAUL’S REIGN God removes his _________ from Saul BLESSING “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have disobeyed the command of the Lord your God. Had you obeyed, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your dynasty must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already chosen him to be king over his people, for you have not obeyed the Lord’s command.” 1 Samuel 13:13-14 Saul begins to make ___________________ BAD DECISIONS Now the men of Israel were worn out that day, because Saul had made them take and oath, saying, “Let a curse fall on anyone who eats before evening-before I have full revenge on my enemies.” 1 Samuel 14:24

SAUL’S REIGN Saul and his men spared Agag’s life and kept the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs-everything, in fact, that appealed to them. They destroyed only what was worthless or of poor quality. 1 Samuel 15:9 “Then what is all the bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle I hear?” Samuel demanded. “It’s true that the army spared the best of the sheep and cattle,” Saul admitted. “But they are going to sacrifice them to the Lord your God. We have destroyed everything else. 1 Samuel 15:14-15

SAUL’S REIGN God ________ Saul as king REJECTS Rebellion is as bad as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as bad as worshiping idols. But please, at least honor me before the leaders and before my people by going with me to worship the Lord your God. 1 Samuel 15:30

SAUL’S REIGN God removes Saul’s _________ and gives it to someone else CALLING Finally, the Lord said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel. Now fill your horn with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to he my new king.” 1 Samuel 16:1 Saul becomes _______________ by his own thoughts TORMENTED Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and the Lord sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear. 1 Samuel 16:14

SAUL’S REIGN Saul allowed __________ to consume him JEALOUSY “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” This made Saul very angry.”What’s this?” he said. “They credit David with ten thousands.
