[N]ow appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have….We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles. 1 Samuel 8:5, 19, 20

[I]t is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 1 Samuel 8:7-8

This is what the L ORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’ But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ 1 Samuel 10:17-19

But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’— even though the L ORD your God was your king. 1 Samuel 12:12

Samuel told all the words of the L ORD to the people who were asking him for a king. He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.

He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 1 Samuel 8:10-17

“I am the L ORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:1-3 me.

But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the L ORD. And the L ORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you … Now listen to them… 1 Samuel 8:6, 7, 9

When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the L ORD. The L ORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.” 1 Samuel 1:21-22

About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me. When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the L ORD said to him, “This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.” 1 Samuel 9:16-17

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the L ORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?” 1 Samuel 10:1

So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king in the presence of the L ORD. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the L ORD, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration. 1 Samuel 11:15

“Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the L ORD, but serve the L ORD with all your heart. Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. For the sake of his great name the L ORD will not reject his people, because the L ORD was pleased to make you his own. 1 Samuel 12:20-22

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.

To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak.

I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
