Community Bible Study GOD CHOOSES THE FIRST KING FOR ISRAEL 1 SAMUEL 9-11 Be Careful What You Ask For

judge In 1 Samuel 8:4-9 (NKJ) 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel, 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the L ORD. 7 And the L ORD said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.

8 … 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign /restrain over them.”

Now make us a king like all of the other nations!!!

“ A people directly governed by God.”

1Samuel 8 Judge-vs 5,king - to govern

1Samuel 8 Judge- vs 5, king - to govern Reign - vs 7, God - to be our “consulter” or “counselor ?”

1Samuel 8 Judge- vs 5, king - to govern Reign - vs 7, God - to be our “consulter” or “counselor ?” Reign - vs 9, king - to restrain, rule, prevail

1 Samuel 9:2(AMP) Kish had a son named Saul, a choice young man and handsome; among all the Israelites there was not a man more handsome than he. He was a head taller than any of the people.

I SAMUEL 9 Choice-vs2, Saul- prime of manhood, goodly, agreeable to the senses

I SAMUEL 9 Choice- vs2, Saul- prime of manhood, goodly, agreeable to the senses I SAMUEL 3 Servant- vs18, Samuel - slave

1 Samuel 9:15-17 (NKJ) Now the L ORD had told Samuel in his ear the day before Saul came, saying, 16 “Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him commander over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.” 17 So when Samuel saw Saul, the L ORD said to him, “There he is, the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign(restrain) over My people.”

They “just happen” to journey near Samuel’s home town, Ramah.

They “just happen” to meet young women going out to draw water. The women say hurry for Samuel ‘just happens” to be just ahead of you. So they went up.

Saul &his servant “just happen” to meet Samuel on his way up to the high place for the sacrificial meal. Samuel piques Saul’s interest by telling of secret things on Saul’s heart.

1 Samuel 9:27 -10:1 (AMP) as they were going down to the outskirts…Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on..—and he passed on— but you stand still, first, that I may cause you to hear the word of God. 10 Then Samuel poured the vial of oil on Saul’s head and kissed him and said, Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over His heritage Israel.

In 1 Samuel 10:6 (AMP) Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily, and you will show yourself to be a prophet with them; and you will be turned into another man.

What is the word of the LORD saying in this verse? 1. Zechariah4:6 Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit [of Whom the oil is a symbol], says the Lord of hosts. My Spirit of power will come upon you. 2. You will speak as inspired by God whether it be praising His name or speak unknown things. Which you have never done before. 3. You will be turned into another man, a different person endowed with courage, skill, mental capacity, someone who he is not now.

Keil and Delitzsch: The Spirit of Jehovah, which manifested itself in the prophesying of the prophets, was to pass over to Saul, so that he would prophesy along with them, and was entirely to transform him.

This transformation is not to be regarded indeed as regeneration in the Christian sense, but as a change resembling regeneration, which affected the entire disposition of mind, and by which Saul was lifted out of his former modes of thought and feeling, which were confined within a narrow earthly sphere, into the far higher sphere of his new royal calling, was filled with kingly thoughts in relation to the service of God, and received "another heart" (1 Samuel 10:9).1 Samuel 10:9

Heart is used in the ordinary scriptural sense, as the centere of the whole mental and psychical life of will, desire, thought, perception, and feeling. Through this sign his anointing as king was to be inwardly sealed.

1 Samuel 10:9 “ another heart” vs Ezekiel 36:26 “a new heart” another / different new/create ’a· ḥ êr ḥ ā· ḏ āš “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

1 Samuel 10:8(NKJ) 8 You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you what you should do.”

“Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you what you should do.”

1 Samuel 10:18-20 (NASB) 18 and he said to the sons of Israel, “Thus says the L ORD, the God of Israel, ‘I brought Israel up from Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the power of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’

19 But you have today rejected your God, who delivers you from all your calamities and your distresses; yet you have said, ‘No, but set a king over us!’ Now therefore, present yourselves before the L ORD by your tribes and by your clans.” 20 Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot.

Saul has hidden in the baggage, so they brought him out and stood him in front of the hundreds of thousands.

. “See how Saul stands head and shoulders above all others!” All shouted “Long live the king”.

1 Samuel 11:6 Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard this news, and his anger was greatly aroused. “Whoever does not go out with Saul and Samuel to battle, so it shall be done to his oxen.”

1 Samuel 11:15(NKJV) So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the L ORD in Gilgal. There they made sacrifices of peace offerings before the L ORD, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

God called Saul. God anointed Saul. God equipped Saul. God assured Saul. God established Saul.
