MAPS 3.G.1.1 Students ARE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND USE MAP COMPONENTS. Examples: Title, map key, compass rose, lines and borders, roads and routes, objects and symbols.

PARTS OF A MAP Most maps have the following elements which make it easy to understand them: -Title -Compass Rose -Lables -Legend/key -Scale -Symbols -Colors

The title explains the subject of the map and gives you an idea of what information the map holds and will tell you. title Which map has a title?

Compass Rose The Compass Rose shows you directions on a map Cardinal directions are- north, south, east, and west Intermediate directions are- northeast, northwest, southwest and southeast.

Legend/Key A legend or key lists and explains the symbols and use of color on the map There to help you read the map and understand it If you are looking for something special, just take a look at the key and see if it’s there first

SCALE Scale shows the ratio between a unit of length on the map and a unit of distance of the earth Shows the distance on the map compared to the real earth measurement

Routes/Major Roads Lines around and through the map are major roads or interstates that are commonly traveled. People are able to look at these maps and see what road they are suppose to take to get them to their destination.

Latitude and Longitude Together, latitude and longitude are on a map to help describe specific places. Longitude runs north and south Latitude run east and west To use this, lets say you want to tell someone exactly where Paris is. Look at the map that has the lines of longitude and latitude on it and you’ll find the line markings with numbers, those numbers tell you exactly where it is located compared to other places around the world. Highly used by boats out at sea and pilots on planes.

Finding Longitude and Latitude Place finger on longitude, and place finger on latitude Move fingers together to see where you end up Once your fingers meet, look at where you’re pointing.
