Unit 1 Government, Policies and the public services Assignment 3

Grades covered

Policies affecting public services The UK government regularly publishes its policies, many of which will have an effect on the way a public services operate. Some of these policies will effect public services ie. Those operating around the law, such as laws related to human rights and equal opportunities. Public services are duty bound to incorporate the requirements of the legislation into their organisation. This could mean employing extra staff or make adjustments for staff with physical disabilities. These often result in extra cost.

Scenario Working within the local authority, you have been seconded to a working party that is monitoring the impact on public services and their personnel of government policies.

Task 1 (P4,M3) Choose two examples of policies affecting different public service from the list below and explain the impact they have on the public services: environmental, civilian equal opportunities human rights financial reductions or increases Activity You have 15 mins to choose one of these to present in a poster format using on more than 10 words. Tip – Use the pdf file pg23 on the wikispace to start you off!

Task 2 (P4, M3) You have been required by the local authority to write a series of reports on different public services. Your report will include the following sections: 1. Policies affecting the military services to include: declarations of war increased use of reserve forces increased use of technology 2. The links with other international services (NATO, United Nations, combined services activities) 3. Policies affecting the emergency services fire and rescue station closures in some areas target setting standards (attendance times, petrol usage, financial targets)

Task 3 (P5) In this section of the report is in the form of social responses to government policies: how government actions affect the public services civil disobedience demonstrations involving the police and ambulance services terrorism affecting all the services meetings that require police attendance picketing of sites such as military bases and closing companies sit-ins to prevent road building

Task 4 (D2) In the last section of your report you should evaluate the impact of government polices on public services and the communities they serve. You may make reference to past sections of your report.
