Academic ASL Papers Gallaudet University MAI Program Fall 2012 Annie Marks

Tech Tool Box Filming options:

Tech Tool Box WHERE?!? – Department Studio room Private, optional studio lights, tripod. – MAI Lab Beware of distractions and sound. (Can cut sound out of movie later during editing). – Other places and ideas?

Background Solid background, clothes with contrasting color and preferably ¾ sleeves or long sleeves.

Background Check your background to make sure it’s clear. No electrical outlets, chairs, floor/carpet, etc.

Sit or Stand? Check with your professor about what they prefer, but standing is preferable since it looks more professional.

What Do I Need to Include?? Title slide - about 5 seconds—long enough to read, but not too long Table of Contents (if professor requires it) Section Labels (like a written English paper with headings/sub- headings) Transitions (fade in/fade out about one sec between slides and clips of signing) Closing References (typed, check with professor if they prefer in the movie at the end, a typed word doc or both)

iMovie - Recording To use a built in web cam to record yourself with iMovie: Go to File > Import from camera… (Command + I shortcut) Make sure built-in iSight is selected. You should be able to see yourself. Click “Capture”. You will need to create an “Event” name or select a previously set up Event. This is where your movie will be imported to after you’re done.

iMovie - Recording Click “Capture” again. FILM FILM FILM!!! When done, click STOP. Some people like to film their whole paper without clicking STOP. Some people prefer to film sections and stop the camera while they are preparing for the next one or practicing. Play around with what is comfortable for you.

iMovie - Recording Tip: It is best to develop an outline and have your paper thoroughly planned out before filming. This may include making an English outline. Some students also like to make an ASL “outline” by signing sections and playing around with how to structure and sign their paper BEFORE going into the studio or setting up to film.

iMovie – Importing from a Camera If you use a video camera that is not a web cam to film yourself, you will need to import the footage. You can use the equipment in the lab to capture the footage to the computer using iMovie or quicktime. Please see Ed, the Department Tech Assistant, or a second year MAI student for help with this.

EDITING (iMovie) Once you are done filming (or importing) your video footage will be in the Event you created.

EDITING (iMovie) Next, create a new Project for your movie. Go to File > New Project IMPORTANT: Make sure your project Aspect Ratio matches what you filmed in. (Standard 4:3, Widescreen 16:9, or HD).

EDITING (iMovie)

Name your Project. Then click Create.

EDITING (iMovie) Now you are ready to select clips from your Event to put in your final movie project. Click, hold, and drag the mouse over sections of your clip that you want to put in your movie. Your selection will have a yellow box around it. When you’re done, click, hold and drag it to your movie project. Tip: Make sure and select the beginning of a clip when your hands are in a resting position, right before you begin signing, and the end when your hands are back in resting position.

EDITING (iMovie)

Click, hold and drag the clip you selected and drop it in your Project.

EDITING (iMovie) The clip you selected will have an orange line in the Event timeline so that you know you’ve already used it.

EDITING (iMovie) Continue this process to add all necessary clips to your movie. Add a title, table of contents (if necessary), and section titles where necessary. The options for titles and transitions are located at the bottom right of the screen. Make sure to add transitions between clips and text slides.

EDITING (iMovie) Transitions Title Slides and Text Slides Drag and drop into Project

Including Examples Some tips for including still photo and video clip examples in your ASL paper: Introduce what you are going to show. Include the clip or photo with a time code. Explain what you just showed and why. *If you need help figuring out how to include video clips or photos, please ask me or another second year student. We don’t bite.
