Centre for Learning Technology Centre for Learning Technology © VW Back to the Future Key Reasons for ELearning Failure in 1980s & 1990s Poor pedagogic approach [Maurer 1998, Wade 2000] IMPORTANCEIMPORTANCE

Centre for Learning Technology Centre for Learning Technology Question:: If adaptive systems are so smart …… why can’t they adapt across application domains ??? Answer: Yes of course: But will it be better; Will it create more complexity; Will it be easier to use?

Centre for Learning Technology Centre for Learning Technology © VW Key Concepts – Key difference Business Processes and Activity Sequences User Centric (UCD) and ergonomics User tools for content construction Learning Paths/Design and Learning Activities Pedagogic models and learning strategies User Scaffolding for Knowledge development General Modelling & Authoring for Business Educational Modelling & Authoring for Education

Centre for Learning Technology Centre for Learning Technology © VW Better Approach Easier to start from a success (AT LEAST THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY GET TOOLS THAT WORK!) => easier to develop specific AH ED system than to start with the general Caveats: –Better to use ‘mainstream’ technology if appropriate e.g. W3C Sem. Web. for concept models, etc –Good design allows future flexibility but be careful of creeping complexity!!

Centre for Learning Technology Centre for Learning Technology Better Question:: If adaptive educational systems are so smart why can’t they adapt into other application domains ??? Answer: Cost, Complexity, Standards, ….

Centre for Learning Technology Centre for Learning Technology Thanks … any questions ?
