Presentation transcript:

Today we will be learning more about addition and subtraction.

Mental Activity We are going to practise counting on and back around the group. When you see or hear “Change!” change direction.

Start on 97. Count forwards in ones. Change!

Start on 32. Count forwards in tens. Change!

Start on 55. Count forwards in fives. Change!

Practise mentally adding and subtracting quickly. Say the answer to each sum in 5 seconds.

= 24

189 - = 9

5?12 + = 7

17?11 - = 6

?69 - = 15

What do 6 and 4 make? 10

What do I add to 5 to make 12? 7

Main Activity Today we are going to think about how words tell us when to add or subtract.

Think of words that mean the same as “add”. + Do your ideas match any words on the fox’s list?

sum total plusmore increase altogether These words mean the same as “add”.

Think of words that mean the same as “subtract”. - We can check the fox’s list.

takelessless thandifference between decreasedifference These words mean the same as “subtract”.

These words are often used in problems. Example: Aaron had 24 marbles. Kelly had 8 more. How many did Kelly have? =

Use one of these words to make up a problem of your own. addition sum total plus altogether more than increase subtraction take away difference less take from less than decrease

Group Work Addition and subtraction activities using number cards
