GLAST Science Support CenterAugust 10, 2004 Users’ Committee Meeting The Project Data Management Plan David Band – GSSC

GLAST Science Support CenterAugust 10, 2004 Users’ Committee Meeting — 2 Current Status I have been maintaining the PDMP for 3 years; it has been in its current form for ~2 years. The PDMP is informed by: –The mission AO –The proposals for the two instrument teams –The Science Requirements Document –The Mission System Specification –The Ground System Operations Concept Document The PDMP is a Project document—433-PLAN-0009—but it has not been put under Configuration Management yet. However, it has been considered mature enough to be presented at major Project reviews.

GLAST Science Support CenterAugust 10, 2004 Users’ Committee Meeting — 3 Revisions I have been updating the PDMP based on: –Evolution of the ground system –Decisions regarding data rights The most recent revision was last month—the resulting draft is on the GSSC website at The drafts have been reviewed frequently by: –Project Scientist and his deputies –NASA Program Scientist and others at NASA HQ –The Science Working Group –The instrument teams –GSSC staff –Project staff, especially from the ground system

GLAST Science Support CenterAugust 10, 2004 Users’ Committee Meeting — 4 What This PDMP Is Not The GLAST PDMP is NOT the Interface Control Document (ICD) for data products exchanged between ground system elements. The data product tables are only for information. –Operations data products (e.g., commands, timelines)—ICD developed by MOC personnel. Fairly well developed. –Science data products (e.g., LAT and GBM event lists)—ICD developed by GSSC (posted on Mature content definition for almost all data products FITS formats defined for most. Some are standard OGIP files, others have been shown to OGIP FITS committee This PDMP is not the controlling description of the ground system, of the operation plans, etc.

GLAST Science Support CenterAugust 10, 2004 Users’ Committee Meeting — 5 What This PDMP Is The GLAST PDMP describes the flow of data from the spacecraft until it is finally archived in the HEASARC at the end of the mission. As such, this PDMP is the controlling statement of the GLAST data rights policies. Other that the data rights policies, is the PDMP ‘obvious?’ NO! –Telemetry through TDRSS and not ground stations –Level 1 data processing by the instrument teams, not a science operations facility tied to the MOC or science center –Commands flow from instrument teams to the MOC through the GSSC (which evaluates impact on science observations) –The GSSC is tied to the HEASARC; most science data products are served directly or indirectly through Browse interface
