1. General points Keep it brief. You don’t need to give a lot of detail. What you are aiming for is a clear and concise explanation of your suitability for the job. Begin your letter or ‘Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms xxxx’ if you know the person’s name, or ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ if you don’t know their name. Avoid inappropriate language such as slang or technical jargon. Use brief, informative sentences and short paragraphs. Check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation carefully. Some employers routinely discard job applications that contain such mistakes.

Your Present Address City, State, ZIP Code Date Person's Name* Title SALUTATION Employer Name Street Address City, State, ZIP Code Dear (Mr., Ms., Dr., etc.): BODY First paragraph: Mention the job you’re applying for and where you found the job listing. Middle paragraphs: Discuss your qualifications. These paragraphs should be specifically tailored to requirements posted in the job Listing. You might also consider including why this specific company interested you in the first place. Limit this section to two to three paragraphs. Final paragraph: Discuss the next steps. If you are going to follow up in one to two weeks, mention a specific date. If you would prefer to leave the ball in their court, say that you look forward to discussing your qualifications further. Also provide your address and phone number. Don’t forget to thank them for their time. (Sincerely, (Your written signature) CLOSE Your typed name

AN OUTLINE OF A PERSON’S EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL HISTORY, USUALLY PREPARED FOR JOB APPLICATION Also Known As: CV Alternate Spellings: curriculum vita Common Misspellings: curiculum vitae, curricullum vitae

The primary differences are the length, the content and the purpose. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. A goal of resume writing is to be brief and concise since, at best, the resume reader will spend a minute or so reviewing your qualifications. A Curriculum Vitae, commonly referred to as CV, is a longer (two or more pages), more detailed synopsis. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details.

Like a resume, your CV should include your name, contact information, education, skills and experience. In addition to the basics, a CV includes research and teaching experience, publications, grants and fellowships, professional associations and licenses, awards and other information relevant to the position you are applying for. Start by making a list of all your background information, then organize it into categories. Make sure you include dates on all the publications you include. There is no need to include your salary history, the reason you left your previous position, or references in your CV. References should be listed separately and given to employers upon request
