EMS and Sustainability

P2 and Sustainability P2 is a goal that promotes efficient use of materials in ways that eliminate or reduce wastes within a process or series of processes… Sustainability expands the evaluation to include the entire lifecycle of use as well as related systems, activities, and regional considerations.

Compliance and Sustainability Sustainability focuses on accomplishing the intent of the compliance requirements: From control of point source emissions to protection/improvement of regional air- and watersheds From waste management to materials and products purchase/lease, use, and disposition management From tracking and reporting of data to evaluation with an eye toward mission impact, quality of life, and sustainability Simulation of natural systems to meet environmental quality standards

Conservation and Sustainability Sustainability and conservation go hand-in- hand as they always have. New challenges might include: Even more innovative land management techniques to preserve habitats while also enhancing mission Participation in resolving encroachment issues around ranges

Restoration and Sustainability Remediation focused not only on meeting concentrations of residual contamination but also considering: Future uses of lands and areas Improvement of environmental quality and habitats Use of natural systems to address current and potential contamination

Resource Use and Sustainability Environmental programs must continue to influence the purchase and use of stuff, energy, water, and air to encourage sustainability: What’s in it? Is it efficient? Is it renewable? Where is it manufactured? How does it impact the environment? How will we get rid of it when we’re through? Does it impact the mission through environmental impacts?

Wrap Up Sustainability: Ties our programs together by seeking solutions that resolve multiple related issues that may be regulated under various regulations Provides us overarching goals and solutions that must be solved by various components (not just environmental) Seeks to integrate environmental issues, as appropriate, into the mission and its related activities
