F ORMS OF E NERGY

E NERGY The ability to do work. Energy can change from one form to another form.

P OTENTIAL E NERGY Potential energy is stored energy. Gravitational potential energy- where object is located Elastic potential energy- due to a change in shape

K INETIC E NERGY Kinetic energy is energy in motion Due to an object's motion such as a moving rollercoaster or a speeding car.

M ECHANICAL E NERGY Motion of an object. Example: blades moving on a fan, walk or run Total potential plus total kinetic energy of an object

T HERMAL E NERGY Heat energy, total amount of energy from the motion of the particles in an object Example: fire, friction from rubbing hands together

C HEMICAL ENERGY Stored in chemical bonds and releases when atom are rearranged Example: battery, food, plants

E LECTRICAL ENERGY Results in moving charges Examples are: ipod charger, dvd player

E LECTROMAGNETIC E NERGY Electromagnetic energy is also called radiant energy or light energy. Caused by vibrations of electrically charged particles.

S OUND ENERGY Energy given off by vibrations

N UCLEAR E NERGY Stored in the nucleus of an atom. Two types: Nuclear fusion: joins two smaller nuclei together Nuclear fission: splits one large nucleus into smaller ones
