SOL PS 6 Energy Potential energy Gravitational potential energy Kinetic energy The ability to do work. Energy stored based on position or chemical composition. Weight X height Energy of motion. Depends on the mass & velocity of the moving object.

Forms of energyLight Heat Chemical Electrical Mechanical Nuclear Sound

Light Heat/Thermal Produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles. Transfers energy without a medium. All of the kinetic energy due to random motion of the particles. Depends on the number of particles as well as the temperature.

Chemical Electrical The energy of a compound that changes as its atoms are rearranged. A form of potential energy. The energy of moving electrons.

Mechanical Nuclear Total energy of motion & position of an object. ME=potential + kinetic Energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom. Fission-splitting of an atom. (Power plants) Fusion-joining of nuclei to make a larger nucleus. (Sunlight & heat)

Sound Energy Transformations A vibrating object transmits energy through the air around it. Travels as a longitudinal wave. Energy can be transformed from one type to another. Some of the energy is lost to the environment as heat.
