 Wellness is the state of being in good health.  Quality of Life refers to a person’s satisfaction with his or her looks, lifestyle, and responses to daily events.  Are you in Optimum Health?  Optimum Health is a state of wellness characterized by peak physical, mental, and social well-being.

 Physical Health- refers to the fitness of your body.  Mental Health- is related to the way you feel about yourself, your life, and the world around you.  Social Health- describes the way you get along with other people.  Holistic Approach to Wellness- is an approach to healthcare that focuses on all aspects of patient care: physical, mental, and social.

 Risk Factor- is a characteristic or behavior that influences a person’s chance of being injured or getting a disease.  Unhealthful Lifestyle Choices- Heart disease, cancer, and stroke are three major causes of death among adults in the U.S.  Poor Environmental Quality- refers to the state of the physical world around you.

 Inadequate Health Care accounts for about 10% of the risk factors that contribute to leading causes of death.  A diagnosis- is the identification of a disease.  Failing to diagnose or recognize a disease early enough can interfere with affective treatment.  Health-Promoting Choices- studies show you have much control over the factors that affect your health.

 Diet- refers to all the foods and beverages you consume.  Sleep 8 to 9 hours each night.  Maintain a healthy weight  Do not smoke  Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages  Do not use “street” drugs.

 Nutrition- is the sum of the process by which a person takes in and uses food substances.  Nutrients- are the basic components of food that nourish the body.  Using the Scientific Method to Study Nutrition & Wellness  First, make a hypothesis.

 State Hypothesis  Devise experiments to test the hypothesis to determine if it is true.

 About 1/3 of the people in the U.S. eats an inadequate diet.  1 out of 3 adults is overweight  1 out of 4 is more than 20% overweight  Popular lifestyle includes less and less physical activity  Important nutrients are missing from the diets of some groups of people such as teens and adults.
