Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) Royal College of Radiologists: Spring meeting Plans and targets for the National PACS programme 08/09 Subject to final national programme board approval Presented to Spring meeting of the Royal College or radiologists Special interest group.

Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) Regional image and report sharing Across the country a number of local sharing options are in place: by April 2008 these will have been reviewed and the strengths of each clarified. By the middle of the year these options will be made available nationally to be used by trusts where appropriate. By April 2008 in London and the Eastern half of NME, initial adopters will be able to exchange images and in London reports via a data centre hosted mechanism. By March 2008 a feasibility study will have assessed the timescales for making a similar functionality available in the South and Western half of NME. By the middle of 2008 advice will be available to trusts and PCTs, based on existing experiences, on when and how to link up imaging in secondary care with primary care.

Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) National image and report sharing By April 2008 a service to allow digital studies and potentially reports to be exchanged between IS providers and acute trusts will be in procurement with the aim to be available for 25 initial adopter trusts in August/September Should the study routing service prove feasible and scalable it will be rolled out to all remaining trusts requiring it by April By the middle of 2008 an outline design for a mechanism to fully share imaging and report information nationally, allowing the clinician to source prior information as opposed to send and receive information to and from known parties, will be agreed and procurement if required proceeding. By April 2009, if feasible the first connections to this national service will have taken place.

Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) Extension of PACS to other clinical services: By Mid 2008 have scoped the support required for the Stroke strategy and provided an outline to the stroke team of the actions required by trusts to optimise the use of PACS. By the end of 2008 have worked with the Cancer strategy breast screening team to define and develop a way to integrate the national breast screening service with PACS. The roll out of this integration will be driven by timescales of the NBSS programme. By the end of 2008, working with a number of initial adopter trusts, have defined and in development a mechanism to integrate the LSP cardiology applications with the LSP PACS, in a way that supports the care record guarantee for maintaining safe management of patient data.

Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) Ensuring secure management of patient data By the end of 2008 provide a PACS and RIS solution in the South and NME (West) that meets the care record guarantee. By mid 2008 have agreed with the other PACS suppliers how they will achieve this, ideally via their standard product road-map.
