Troop 125 Vision Looking Back, Looking Forward Bob Kowalski February 18, /1/ Troop 125 Vision

Agenda Vision Assessment Expectations and Feedback Boy Run Troop Polarities Short Term Goals Long Term Goals Great Teams Questions 2/20/2016 3

Troop 125 Vision We will provide our boys with the best Scouting Experience by: –Focusing on the three primary aims of scouting: Character Development - Leadership Citizenship Training – Community Service Mental and Physical Fitness - Outings –Provide an opportunity for boys to develop Independence Self Reliance Sense of adventure Self Confidence –Providing both a physically and emotionally safe environment to achieve the above.

Assessment The Troop is strong Mr. Voigt has made many structural improvements over the last year, that has positioned the Troop for growth. We have a great foundation to make continuous improvement on. We owe it to the legacy of the troop to rise and exceed previous great levels

Expectations and Feedback The SPL, PLC, Troop will be made aware of my expectations. They will be given timely, direct and honest feedback on their performance to my expectations (both positive and negative) I expect the same from everyone (SPL, PLC, Troop Committee and Parents) Direct and honest feedback is not cruel. Rather not providing direct and honest feedback and then informing someone they are not meeting expectations is unfair and cruel

Boy Run Troop The Uniform Leaders will strive to give the Boy Leadership the opportunity to truly lead the troop by: –Ensuring the boys will execute all tasks they are safely capable of. –Facilitating PLC’s to ensure the program is properly planned. –Coaching the boys to enable them to run the troop –Being there to assure when the boys fail we act as a safety net and they learn from the experince.

Polarities We need to recognize that there are several polarities in the way we run the Troop including: –Leadership (Boy run vs. Adult run Troop) –Advancement (Boys advancing quickly vs. boys being held back) –Parent involvement (Parents not involved vs. Parents too involved) –Trip Attendance (deadlines vs. scout attendance) We must acknowledge these polarities and learn to manage them.

Short Term Goals Most of the Troop functions are very good Need to identify 1 or 2 areas for improvement’ –Need to focus on improving troop meetings More learning More physical activity More utilization of Troop Planning Guide –Need to focus on setting expectations and providing feedback on performance Clearly defining expectations for leadership positions Clear and timely feedback on performance relative to expectations

Long Term Goals Need to identify 1 or 2 areas for improvement’ –Need to develop a consistent and reliable flow of new scouts into the troop. Improve our relationships with the packs Help Strengthen the Packs Become the troop that the packs want to join –Improve the Troops program Consider Split programs on trips to better retain older scouts Reinstate high adventure programs Consider some really “big trips”

Great Teams Mets Vs. Yankees –Who would not want to be the Centerfielder for the NY Yankees? Troop 125 –Who would not want to be SPL of Troop 125? –Why would you want to be a 125 Eagle Scout rather than just any other Eagle Scout? –Why wouldn’t all Commack Webelos want to join Troop 125?
