Considerations for Shelter ► There is no “right way”  Using materials that are available ► Terms describing most basic shelters:  A Frame- a stick frame shaped like the letter “A”  Teepee- shaped like a common Native American teepee, made from sticks and foliage  Lean-to- wall of sticks built on a leaning angle to protect from elements  Others- burrow out a shelter, make a shelter from rocks or logs, dig into the snow, etc.

Get Off The Ground! ( Tree Shelters) ► First rule in all cases is to get off the ground!  Keep safe from: ► Flash floods ► Mean beasts ► Bad bugs  No shelter is perfect, always a risk of something like snakes or insects ► More likely on the ground than off. ► ** ALWAYS TIE YOURSELF IN!**

Tree Shelters ► Find an easily climbable tree ► Don’t go too high, so if you do fall, it wont be fatal ► Look for a fork of two very strong branches to lay other branches between to make a platform ► Once frame is built, lay more branches between and parallel to outer structure. ► Then put down a lot of soft bushy stuff for a mattress--- use a lot because it will get matted down.

Tree Shelters Cont. ► Then fashion a roof in the same manner ► Use higher branches to lay slats and cover. ► Leave open side away from wind ► Main concept of a tree shelter:  Off the ground  Strong platform  Decent overhead protection

Ground Shelter ► Use when no trees near by, or no suitable trees available ► Still separate your self from the ground, build a platform  Use: ► Logs ► Rocks ► Pile of vegetation ► Etc.

Ground Shelter Cont. ► After platform, build walls (if materials are available) ► Build a Classic A- Frame  Angle two long branches from the ground up  Meeting at a center point a few feet off the ground  Tie together (should look like a letter A). This is the front  Then make another “A” for the back  Then tie one long stick to tie both together for the top roof  Finally lay many sticks on an angle from top beam down to the ground on either side, and cover with as much foliage as possible.
