Presentation transcript:

KH 2220 Laura Abbott, MS, LMT Day 20 Muscles of the Pelvis Quadratus Lumborum, Iliopsoas, Deep Six Hip Rotators, Gluteals

Quadratus Lumborum “Hip Hiker Muscle” O: Posterior iliac crest I: Transverse Process of L 1-5 and inferior border of rib 12 A: –Unilaterally: laterally tilts pelvis, laterally flexes vertebral column, assists in back extension –Bilaterally: fix the last rib during inhalation, assists in back extension and forced exhalation

Iliacus O: iliac fossa and base of sacrum I: greater psoas tendon and lesser trochanter of femur A: flexes thigh, laterally rotates hip, adducts hip

Psoas O: Bodies and TPs of lumbar vertebrae I: lesser trochanter of femur A: flexes thigh or trunk, laterally rotates, and adducts hip.

Iliopsoas a compound muscle consisting of the iliac and psoas major muscles. A: Hip and trunk flexion

Deep Six Hip Rotators Piriformis Quadratus Femoris Gemellus Superior Gemellus Inferior Obturator Internus Obturator Externus All are external rotators of the hip

Deep Six: Piriformis O: anterior surface of sacrum I: upper border of greater trochanter A: rotates thigh laterally, abducts hip when hip is flexed.

Gluteal Maximus O: posterior iliac crest, dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx, sacrotuberous ligament I: iliotibial tract of fascia lata, gluteal tuberosity of femur A: All fibers extend, laterally rotate, and abducts hip. –Lower fibers adduct hip

Gluteal Medius O: lateral surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines I: greater trochanter of femur A: All fibers abduct hip –Anterior fibers flex and medially rotate hip –Posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate hip

Gluteal Minimus O: lateral surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines I: greater trochanter of femur A: abducts, rotates thigh medially, flexes hip.
