CAT 3 – Analysing a skill Golf swing Joe Smith

Elite Performer’s Swing My Swing Prior to the commencement of the skill Follow through Ball release Initial movement prior to the ball release

My Results Observed Body Part Prior to commencement of skill (ready position) Initial movement prior to ball release Ball releaseFollow Through Foot Position Feet are further than hip width apart, they are pointed on an angle Knee Position Knees are locked out straight Body Position Eyes are looking at the ball, the club is straight Elbow Position Left elbow is bent, right elbow is straight Wrist PositionWrist and hands have the correct position on the grip

Elite Performer Results Observed Body Part Prior to commencement of skill (ready position) Initial movement prior to ball release Ball releaseFollow Through Foot Position Facing parallel to the tee Knee Position Slight bend Body Position Shoulders leaning over the tee, eyes looking at the ball Elbow Position Elbows are locked out, brining the club behind the body at a 90 degree angle Wrist PositionWrists are aligned with dominant hand lower on the grip.

What areas of your shooting technique did you identify, that were different (need development) to that of the elite performer? (Minimum 4 areas need to be identified)  Foot position prior to the swing  Body position at release  Wrist position at ball release  Follow through – angle of golf club

For each of the areas you identified in question 1, identify exactly what part of the skill was different to that of the elite performer; i.e. your knee bend prior to the release of the shot was not as big as the elite performer’s knee bend.  Foot position prior to the swing  The specific part that was different was….  Body position at release  The specific part that was different was….  Wrist position at ball release  The specific part that was different was….  Follow through – angle of golf club  The specific part that was different was….

Investigate and include 4 practice drills you could use to improve your technique? Research on the Internet and/or ask your PE teacher or other students who may play at a high level. Drill 1 – Nearest the pin -Several markers are placed parallel to the hitting line. -Hit the balls, trying to land yours closest to the targets Drill 2 – Right Arm Only - Hold the club with your right hand only and make a golf swing. Hold your right biceps muscle with your left hand. Make sure you allow your right elbow to bend to a ninety degree angle at the top of your backswing. On the downswing, make sure you push the whole club back and down, don’t just pull the grip down. Feel your right arm straightening back and down and the weight of the club in your right hand as you push against the club shaft. Do this drill often to create a clear image of what you will do on the downswing. Drill 3 – 10 ball hitting - Set up 10 teed-up balls and make full swings in slow motion. The balls should only travel metres. Think of this speed as 10-percent of your normal swing speed. Every 10 balls, increase your body rotation speed by 10-percent. By the time you reach 80-percent, you will arrive at your optimum rhythm and balance speed. Drill 4 – Swinging rhythm - Place 5 tees in the ground 4 inches apart in a line. Stand just inside the closest tee and begin swinging a 7-iron back and through with a continuous swing motion. Begin walking forward, clipping each tee out of the ground in succession. Repeat this drill three times and you will find a swing pace that will allow you to keep your balance and still generate club head speed.

What area of your shooting technique did you identify that was performed very similar to that of the elite performer? Why do you believe it is important to keep practicing a particular part of the skill when you may have already perfected the technique?  I found that my grip was very similar to that of the elite athlete.  It is important to keep practising a skill because …..

Why do you believe video analysis is so effective at improving skill development in sports? Discuss.  I believe video analysis is important because: 1. Explanation 1 2. Explanation 2 3. Explanation 3 4. Explanation 4
