Start of strong! 1. Introduction sentence(s) – introduces topic AND provides your thesis (statement that includes your argument – usually 3 prongs) EXAMPLE – Many events contributed to the heightened tension between the American colonies and England in the years before the American Revolution, but the Proclamation of 1763, the Boston Massacre, and the Intolerable Acts were most responsible for the high levels of unrest that ultimately led to war.

Body – Convince me! Now, take each topic from introduction and expand Describe the event AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ANALYZE (determine the significance) - how did the event create such high levels of unrest? Example – Five colonists were killed by British soldiers in Boston, arguably in self-defense. Revere’s engraving of the so-called “Boston Massacre” showed soldiers firing on an innocent crowd – this image was re-printed in newspapers across the colonies, labeling it a “massacre” added to colonial outrage. In the minds of the colonists this was not self-defense, but rather the British soldiers acting like tyrants who were ready and willing to use deadly force to keep them in line.

Conclusion – Restate and wrap it up! Restate the three prongs of your argument and take the topic into the future EXAMPLE – There are always many reasons why wars begin. This is true for the American Revolution as well, but the Proclamation of 1763, the Boston Massacre, and the Intolerable Acts did the most to heighten colonial tensions with Britain, and in the end, led America to want to fight for its independence.

Other important things to remember when writing 1 – Discuss your points in chronological order (the order they occurred) – Why does this matter? 2 – Grammar and spelling do matter – be sure to edit 3 – Do not use “I” – just make your argument – Non – example – I am going to tell you why the Boston Massacre was the most important event contributing to colonial unrest – Example – The Boston Massacre was the most important event that contributed to colonial unrest

You are being asked to think at a higher level and this takes practice – the more you do it the better writer you will be!
