#5 – Entrance Through The Veil

 “Behind the second veil there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies…and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat…only the high priest enters once a year, not without taking blood….” Hebrews 9:3,5,7

We have been transferred into the holiest of holies – the very presence of Almighty God. The experience is well discussed in four amazing verses in Hebrews 10:19-22.

Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

 What animal sacrifices could never do  Hebrews 10:1-4  Could never by repetitive sacrifices perfect worshipers.  Could not cleanse the conscience.  Could not take away sin.

 Great Day of Atonement  Cherubim woven into the veil.  Cherubim overshadowing the mercy seat  Blood for atonement and incense smoke for prayers  Repeat.Repeat.Repeat

We Have A New Confidence Vs. 19 – …since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus…. Confidence: PARRESIA – boldness, outspokenness, confidence Contrasting the fear of the Levitical Priest By the blood of Jesus

 Vs …to enter the holy place  Holy of Holies  Physically of heaven, the throne room of God.  Spiritually of the nearness of God.

 Vs …by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh…  Through the veil  Torn flesh of the veil  Possible only through His sinlessness

 Vs …and since we have a great priest over the house of God…

 Vs …let us draw near with a sincere heart…  A heart that is convicted  A heart that is pure  A heart that is obedient

 Vs …in full assurance of faith…  Hebrews 12:2 – “…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith….”

Vs …having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience… References OT blood sprinkling NT “heart” is our minds Sprinkled = knowledge and acceptance of the gospel and the application by God of the blood of Jesus to our sins

 Vs …sprinkled clean from an evil conscience…  Hebrews 9:14 – “…how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

 Vs …and our bodies washed with pure water…  Can only refer to our baptism – a complete renewal into a new creature

 Exodus 29:4, – “Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water….You shall slaughter the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the lobes of his sons…and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet….”

 “This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood….”

 Luke 12:50 – “But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!”  His was a baptism of suffering – the shedding of His blood. Dying for us!
