The Christian Creeds: The Apostles’ Creed and The Nicene Creed

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed  Creed means “I believe”  The Apostles’ Creed is an expression of the core beliefs held by the Catholic Church  The creed gives us insight into who God is and our connection to Him

The Apostles’ Creed The following are the key beliefs identified in the creed:  The holy Catholic (universal) church  The communion of saints (“People in heaven pray for people on earth and people on earth pray for people suffering in purgatory, a place of purification before entering heaven”)  The forgiveness of sins  The resurrection of the body (“When Jesus comes again your body will be resurrected and glorified”)  Life everlasting (Your soul will never die. It will live forever”)

The Apostles’ Creed Blessed Trinity: the belief in three persons in one God God the Father:  Must give credit to Him for making “heaven and earth” God the Son:  Will one day come to evaluate humankind  Will “judge the living and the dead” The Holy Spirit:  Can help humans attain the grace needed for sanctification

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

The Nicene Creed For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

The Nicene Creed I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Nicene Creed  The Nicene Creed was developed at the Councils of Nicaea (325 AD) and the Council of Constantinople (381 AD)  It is a personal profession of the core beliefs held by Catholics  Reminds believers of the mysteries of the Catholic faith  Permits believers to “respond to the Word of God that was proclaimed in the readings [at mass]”

The Nicene Creed  The following are the key beliefs identified in the creed:  One God (Monotheism)  God created heaven and earth  Jesus has always existed. *He was not created (begotten) by God.  Jesus is 100% divine and %100 human (Incarnation)  Jesus and God the Father are of the same substance, one God (Consubstantial)  Holy Spirit proceeds from God the Father and Son  Jesus’ death and resurrection gives us access to salvation  Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead
