Let’s take a look at some birds and the adaptations that help them get the food they need to survive.

The toucan’s beak is adapted to grab and crush fruit and nuts. It is strong like a nutcracker.

The warbler stops singing to catch an insect flying by. The warbler’s beak is pointed like tweezers.

The pelican’s bill is adapted to scoop up fish to eat.

A hummingbird’s long, thin beak can get to the nectar in flowers.

When woodpeckers hunt for grubs, they drill through the bark of trees to get to them. The woodpecker’s beak is hard and pointy.

A red cardinal cracks open seeds with its bill. The cardinal’s beak is short and hard like a nutcracker.

Adaptations These birds are all looking for a meal. But because their food is different, their beaks have different shapes.

Over many thousands of years, these birds’ beaks adapted to help them gather the food they need. All plants and animals species have adaptations, or changes that help them survive in their habitat.
