Weathering is… The breaking apart and changing of rocks

Weathering can be caused by … 1.Water 2.Changing temperatures 3.Living things

An example of weathering that we often see right in our town is… POTHOLES!!

Water can break apart rocks because…. 1. Water gets into the cracks of the rocks 2. Water freezes and expands, or grows larger 3. It pushes (puts pressure) on the sides of the cracks 4. The rocks may break apart

The part of a plant that can break the rocks is the… PLANT ROOT

EROSION IS…. The carrying away of weathered rocks or soil by water, wind or other causes.

On Long Island we see a great deal of erosion from water at our beaches Fire Island, NY after Hurricane Sandy
