Presentation transcript:

› In 1527, after a long marriage to Catherine of Aragon (Spain), King Henry VII only had one surviving child, Mary Tudor.  Henry believed that he had to have a male heir. › The Catholic Church does not permit divorce, but Henry wanted a male heir. › So Henry asked the Pope for an annulment, or cancelation of the marriage. › The Pope refused to give Henry the annulment. Catherin of Aragon

› The king was furious that the pope wouldn’t give him the annulment so King Henry passed a series of laws that put the English church in HIS (the kings) hands as the leader (not the pope). › So in short, the king created The Church of England (also called the Anglican Church) in order to get a new wife. › In 1534 Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, which made King Henry the head of the Church of England. › The Church of England was almost identical to the Catholic Church, but just had the King at the head of it. The Church of England

› Anne was a very educated woman, who refused to give in to the King’s demands.  She had two stillborn children before she suffered a miscarriage of a male child.  She did give birth to Elizabeth I, future Queen of England › Henry was growing impatient with Anne and so he › declared that his marriage was a product of witchcraft and had her imprisoned. She was accused of incest, adultery, and high treason.  Executed Anne by having her beheaded. Anne Boleyn

› Married to Henry 11 days after Anne’s death › Jane Seymour gave birth to a son, Edward VI, but died in childbirth. › The King was distraught  he believed Jane to be his one true wife, since she gave him a son. He would later be buried next to her. Jane Seymour

› The king needed a new Queen and so Anne of Cleves was suggested › The king ordered his men to bring a portrait of her, and when he saw it he agreed to marry her. › Once she came to England however, Henry thought she was ugly and wanted to have that marriage annulled as well. › The marriage was never consummated so the marriage was dissolved easily. Anne of Cleves

› Was about 30 years the king’s junior › She engaged in an adulterous relationship  When the king found out he had her executed for adultery. She was between 17 and 22 when she was killed. Katherine Howard
