Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 The FLSA establishes minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping, and youth employment standards affecting employees in the private sector and in Federal, State, and local governments. Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour effective July 24,  Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher minimum wage. Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 Overtime pay at a rate not less than one and one-half times the regular rate of pay is required after 40 hours of work in a workweek. Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 Minimum age for employment in non- agricultural employment is 14.  Under Age 14:  Children age 13 or under cannot work at a non-agricultural job. Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 Hours 14 and 15 year-olds can work are limited to:  Hours when teen isn't in school  3 hours on a school day  18 hours total during a school week  8 hours on a non-school day  40 hours total during a non-school week  Hours between 7 am and 7 pm from Labor Day to May 31  Hours between 7 am and 9 pm from June 1 through Labor Day Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 Hours Ages 16 and 17 Can Work:  There is no limit on hours, but, if you're under 18 you can't work in a job that the Labor Department considers hazardous.  Over Age 18:  There are no limits on the hours you can work if you are over 18. Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 Students enrolled in an approved Cooperative Education Program may work up to 6 hours the day before a school day, as long as the hours are part of the program. Include any hours worked in such program when figuring out hours worked for the 4 hour maximum. Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.

 When school is not in session, and during vacations (school must close for the entire calendar week):  Minors under 18 may not work more than 8 hours a day, 6 days a week  Minors 14 and 15 may not work more than 40 hours a week  16 and 17 year-olds may not work more than 48 hours a week Aim: Understand the laws that protect you.
