What was the Industrial Revolution? – Began in England and spread to countries like the United States. The Industrial Revolution was a change in the way goods were produced, from human labor to machines. The more efficient means of production and higher levels of production triggered changes to industrialized societies.

What was new?  Machines were invented which replaced human labor  New energy sources were developed to power the new machinery – water, steam, electricity, oil (gas, kerosene)  Increased use of metals and minerals Aluminum, coal, copper, iron, etc.

Transportation & Communication  Transportation improved Ships ○ Wooden ships → Iron ships → Steel ships ○ Wind-powered sails → Steam-powered boilers Trains Automobiles  Communication improved Telegraph Telephone Radio

So many changes…  Mass production of goods Increased numbers of goods Increased diversity of goods produced  Development of factory system of production  Rural-to-urban migration People left farms to work in cities  Development and growth of new socio- economic classes Working class, bourgeoisie, and wealthy industrial class

Causes Cotton from English colonies created the demand for an easy way to produce it into a product. Cotton was cheap to get from the colonies and increased the size of their market (those that wanted a product)

Causes The Domestic System of Production where those that specialized in manufacturing goods would work from home producing products from raw materials and then giving to the businessman to sell. Could not keep up with the demand (want)

Factory System Replaced the Domestic System of Production Faster method of production Workers all worked together outside the home Production of products was able to anticipate and fulfill the demand.

Why did it start in England? Raw materials from colonies such as cotton Raw materials at home such as coal (for powering steam engines) and iron (for railways, machine, ships, etc) Plenty of available workers Ideal location: England is an island
