Phase Changes of Water ICE WATER STEAM

Kinetic (moving) Molecular Theory All matter consists of small particles (atoms/molecules) All particles are in constant motion If energy is added – particles speed up – Liquid or gas phase (depending on speed) If energy is removed – particles slow down – Liquid or solid (depending on speed) The temperature of an object is a measurement of the energy of it’s moving particles

Vocabulary Melting – Changing from solid to liquid. Caused by adding energy Freezing – Changing from liquid to solid. Caused by removal of energy Boiling – Changing from liquid to gas at a substance’s boiling point. Caused by adding energy Evaporating – Changing from a liquid to gas at liquids surface Condensing – changing from a gas to a liquid

The Water Cycle Earth’s Water Distribution 71% of Earth is covered in water – 97% of total water is in the oceans – More than 2% of total water is ice – Less than 1% in rivers and lakes

Water Cycle Phase Changes Evaporation: Energy from the sun heats large bodies of water (lakes and oceans) Water changes from its liquid form to its gas form (water vapor) Rises into the atmosphere

Water Cycle Phase Changes Condensation: As water vapor rises it cools Forms tiny droplets on dust or mineral particles in the air Accumulates to form clouds

Water Cycle Phase Changes Precipitation: Droplets continue to form – clouds get bigger and heavier When the atmosphere cannot support the weight, the water falls back to earth (precipitation) Can be rain, snow, hail, or sleet

Water Cycle Runoff: Liquid water flows down hill into creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes on its way back to the ocean Water may flow underground as groundwater

Law of Conservation of Mass States that: Matter can be changed from one form to another. Mixtures can be formed and separated Pure substances can be decomposed BUT the total amount of mass remains constant.
