Presentation transcript:

Zebras are part of the horse family. It is a native of central & South Africa.

Speed Zebras do not run as fast as horses. They can run a maximum of 40m per hour. A horse can run much faster than this but zebras can last over a long time. The average lifespan of a zebra is 28 years.

Black & White stripes Zebras have black and white stripes all over their bodies. Each stripe is unique. These stripes confuse their predators and makes it difficult to make them out from each other in a group. Their stripy shiny coats also prevent them from overheating in the open plains of Africa.

Predators Their jaws are long and thin and their eyes are on the side of their heads so they can see if predators are coming. Zebras stick together in a herd. They must be wary of lions and hyenas. If a zebra is attacked, the whole herd will try to defend it.

Some facts about zebra The zebra has a very powerful kick and will use this to defend themselves against predators. They eat leaves, bark, buds, fruit and grass. Just like horses- the male is called a stallion, female is called a mare & young is called a foal. A group of zebra are called a herd.

Noises and eyesight They have sharp front teeth for grazing and dull back teeth for grinding and pulling. The noises they make include braying, barking & snorting. Their night time vision is said to be as good as that of an owl.

Zebra or a horse? It is not possible to ride a zebra as they have a flat back. The horse has a curved back and so it is easier to ride a horse.
