2 Social Studies  Grade Level: Kindergarten  Lesson: School Community

3 Objectives:  To introduce the community of the school and its environment.  To introduce the people involved in the school and the jobs they hold.

4 Materials Needed:  Gingerbread Man story  Gingerbread Man pattern  Cookie sheet  Recipe for gingerbread  Map of school environment  Camera/pictures of school employees  Sentence strips with job descriptions  Paper  Crayons

6 Student Activities:  Read Gingerbread Man to students  Make a large gingerbread man from recipe and take him to the kitchen.  Show students pictures of people in the school and discuss jobs.  Invite people into classroom to meet students.  Have students draw a picture of one person and tell why they chose that person.  Have students match pictures with sentences about jobs within the school.

7 When you’re not feeling well, this is the person to tell... The school nurse!

8 When something is bothering you, this is the person to talk to... The school counselor!

9 When you want to find a book, this person will help you look... The school librarian!

10 When you’re ready for something to munch, this is the person to see for lunch... The cafeteria cook!

11 Please keep your schoolroom neat. For this person, messes are no treat... The school custodian!

12 He is your teacher’s boss and the leader of your school. He’s here to make sure you follow all the rules! The school principal!

13 If you arrive late to school because your morning has been hairy, go straight to her office and visit... The school secretary!

14 This person wants to help you out and make sure you succeed. He/she will help you learn to add, to write, and to read... Your TEACHER!!

15 When you need a ride to school because you can’t walk to us, this person picks you up in a big yellow bus... The schoolbus driver!
