Keep in mind…

Background Knowledge Students are acquiring language in their home language. Therefore, it is important that we teach specific academic language in our classrooms.

Two Types of Language Learners Simultaneous language learner: The child comes from a home where both languages are spoken. (English and home language) Sequential language learner: The child comes from a home where only one language is spoken to the child.

Stages: Pre-production (silent period) Early production (one- or two-word phrases) Speech emergence (simple phrases and sentence) Intermediate fluency (more complex sentences) Advanced fluency (near native ability)

Good to know… Good instruction for students in general is also good instruction for English language learners.

ESL Time The ESL block of time should be: 75 minutes of English through Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing

ESL Time 30 minutes of English instruction reinforcing concepts using Frog Street Press and other resources 45 minutes of English language development through ancillary subjects (art, music, PE, Library, etc.)

Background Knowledge: Songs/Chants Moving and Learning is an important time to use kinesthetic learning to cement the English language for the Prekindergarten student. Music, movement, and chants help students remember large portions of language they would otherwise not be able to memorize.

Background Knowledge: Read Aloud The read aloud provides the springboard for the direct instruction you will present in the whole group activity. The read aloud and the whole group activities are repeated throughout the week at the beginning of the year, and then the activities begin to vary as the year goes on and students acquire more language.

ESL Centers Center activities may be composed of story baskets containing previously read stories, or opportunities to practice other skills and concepts that have been previously introduced in whole group.

Small Group Instruction Small group instruction can be at a center so that students know how to use the materials independently during their center time. This is a perfect opportunity to take anecdotal notes and determine any additional centers you might want to add.

Small Group Instruction ALL small group time should include significant amounts of students speaking English, either by repeating the teacher or producing their own ideas.

Strategies Total Physical Response An interactive language teaching approach designed for second language acquisition. Teacher interacts with students by giving commands Students demonstrate comprehension by physical response Students are not expected to respond orally until they are ready The use of physical activity to increase meaningful language opportunity is a central principle.

Total Physical Response 4 Steps 1.Set up: Identify vocabulary, language structures and environment. 2.Demonstration: Demonstrate the action. 3.Group Live Action: Give the commands and invite students to respond in a physical way. Repeat several times. 4.Written Copy: Write the commands on a chart with pictures. Use only when students are ready for it.
