Topics….. Rationale and Big Ideas Infographic- Financial Literacy Education Works! Challenges Game Plan Scaffolding Charts Lesson Plan Example Next Steps- How to get prepared? AGENDA

Money Matters Big Idea: Students must be prepared to enter the increasingly complex economic world we live in as knowledgeable, responsible, and financially literate members of society. Budgeting and managing money, working with credit and debt, and learning to make wise consumer decisions are important life lessons all students must learn.

Money Matters Lacking financial literacy skills, young adults frequently fail to make wise decisions and often fall quickly into debt. Ultimately, these young adults are forced to spend their 20's and 30's trying to dig themselves out of unnecessary debt, eliminating any chance to use these critical years for saving and investing. Clearly, financial literacy skills are basic, life-long skills that must be addressed in the curriculum, most notably in required senior high school Economics courses. Instruction must address: – Personal financial management skills, including an understanding of income, money and budget management, savings and investing, banking, and credit; and – Wise consumer and financial decision-making.

Money Matters Current State of Financial Literacy in M-DCPS and Florida: -Benchmarks exist for grades 4, 8, and 12. -The only benchmarks that are assigned to a course are the 12 th grade benchmarks in the traditional Economics course. -M-DCPS does not require a stand-along Financial Literacy Course NOR does the FLDOE require it.

Money Matters Big Idea: -This reality does NOT address that students NEED to be educated on financial literacy in a comprehensive K-12 initiative. -It is simply the right thing to do!

Money Matters- Financial Lit Education Works

Money Matters Challenges: -Where, when, and how are teachers supposed to find the time and develop the skills to teach these important life skills.

Money Matters GAME PLAN: -Post-assessment season during the last three weeks of the academic year: -Implement a comprehensive K-11 Financial Literacy program. -12 grade will do so through the required Economics course.

Money Matters GAME PLAN: -Stand alone, no planning needed, lesson plans will be published on the Department of Social Sciences’ website: by Spring 2016 and ready for instruction lessons plans per grade level will be available.

Money Matters GAME PLAN: -Resources for the and on academic years to be implemented throughout the entire school year are: -Money Mondays and/or Financial Fridays (announcements and information that can be shared school-wide about financial literacy content and skills- think Values Matters but for Finance!)

Money Matters Scaffolding Charts: -Let’s review the benchmarks for -Grade 4 (what a student should master by end of grade 4); -Grade 8 (what a student should master by end of grade 8); and -Grade 12 (what a student should master by the end of grade 12).

Money Matters Sample Lesson Plan Grade 6: -Let’s review a sample lesson plan for grade 6 requiring students to think critically about advertising.

Next Steps- how to get prepared? 1.Pay attention to the weekly briefings posted in the next few months announcing when lesson plans will be available. 2.Download lessons that will be posted on the Department of Social Sciences’ website to implement the last three weeks of the school year. 3.Review the lessons in order to be prepared to use them effectively with your students. 4.Enjoy teaching a subject that students completely gravitate towards and NEED to be develop these important life skills. 5.As you also become more comfortable with the subject of financial literacy- develop your own lessons.

Next Steps- Pop Quiz Let’s see how much you currently know about money and finance! See K-2 sample lesson. THING ABOUT: Each question and what info and skills students are acquiring.
