Jennie Sealy Fire Protection Features Fully Sprinklered Fire Alarm System with Voice Announcements Some Protected Elevator Lobbies (for firefighter use) Fire Extinguishers Several Smoke/Fire Compartments on every floor Vertical and Horizontal Exits Protected Access to Adjacent Buildings There is no Level 3… Click to Continue

Fire Alarm System 1100 Smoke Detectors 1200 Speaker-Strobes Alarm Notification Process- Floor of the event receives notification Floors above and below event receive notification If there’s an event on either level 1, 2, or 4 - all 3 levels get notified because of open entryway. Voice Capability allows us to make announcements with additional instructions if necessary. Listen for “Dr. Red” coded announcements Click to Continue

Elevators Elevator lobbies are separated from the corridors with a fire/smoke barrier. Note: The public elevator lobby on level 2 is not separated/protected. If there is an event in an elevator lobby, the elevators enter “fire recall” and cannot be used. The Staff elevators are in a separate smoke compartment from the public ones. The central staff elevator is specifically designed for fire fighter use during emergencies. Only Galveston Fire Department (GFD) or other authorized emergency responders should operate the elevators during a fire emergency. Click to Continue

Elevator Special Information Note: If elevators are in “fire recall”, Galveston Fire Department will have to operate the elevators to move patients. The flashing fireman’s hat in the lobby is an indicator that has happened. Click to Continue

Building Stack Levels 2 through 6 are Pedestal Floors. Level 2 and 4 can support patient care. Level 4 has the most patient care: Click to Continue

Building Stack Levels 8-11 are patient bed towers: Typical layout Click to Continue

Defend-in-Place The overall concept for healthcare is that patients will stay in a protected healthcare environment as long as possible and remain safe. Areas not directly affected by an incident will defend-in- place and begin preparations to evacuate/receive evacuees: 1.Clear the corridors of items and equipment 2.Close patient room doors 3.Instruct visitors/family members to wait in waiting room or the patient room for further instructions until alarm is over. 4.Scan your environment for hazards (i.e. fire/smoke) 5.Report to your immediate supervisor Click to Continue

Compartment of Fire Origin If the incident is within your area, you will be evacuating to the compartment to the north/south of you. Each wing (A, B, C, D) is a smoke compartment. A and B wings are each other’s refuge area. C and D wings are each other’s refuge area. C wing D wing When Evacuating Click to Continue

Won Door (Accordion Fire Door) Operation Won Doors are like cross-corridor doors and will close when activated by the fire alarm. Won doors are located in the Clinical Service Wing and Jennie Sealy Hospital on multiple floors. The doors have a bump-stop safety that will stop the door when it contacts an object (see video). If you need to get through a closed Won door, press the green bar and it will open, let you through then close again behind you. Click to Continue

Pull the pull station If you see smoke or flames, you need to pull the fire pull station Summons the Police, who call the fire department and other emergency responders to your exact location Allows rapid response Follow up by calling the Fire Phone at (409) , or just extension Click to Continue

Elevator Access The elevators are located in the central smoke compartments, separate from each wing The middle compartments make another level of protection around each bank of elevators. Click to Continue

Connection to Campus Patient Transport during an emergency: Jennie Sealy connects to the Clinical Services Wing in two locations on Level 2 and Level 4. Additional connections are available on Level 5 and Level 6 as a last resort (non-patient care areas). Click to Continue

Vertical Evacuation For larger incidents, vertical evacuation may be necessary. Primary evacuation point will generally be to level 4 (depending on the Incident Command’s directions). GFD will help use the elevators, if they are accessible CSW, John Sealy Hospital, John Sealy Annex, or Trauma Center, may be ultimate destinations. Secondary evacuation point will be to Level 2, and then on to another building as appropriate. If elevators are not available, vertical evacuation will be down the stairs to the next patient floor. Patient floors are only on 2, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Click to Continue
