A Dangerous Past : Using ArcGIS to Determine VOC Plume Location from a Uranium Fuel Processing Facility in Hematite, MO Emily Carter, ENVE 424, 8 May 2003

Hematite Fuel Fabrication Facility Hematite, MO Southeastern corner of Jefferson County, 35 miles south of St. Louis Opened in 1956 by Mallinckrodt Nuclear Corporation Now owned by Westinghouse Electric Company Currently undergoing decommissing after production stopped in summer 2001 Had been oldest commercial Uranium processing facility in the country

The Contamination In 2002, during groundwater investigations completed for decommissioning of the plant, VOCs were found in 8 private drinking wells VOCs included Trichloroethylene, Percholorethylene, and their byproducts DNR is currently overseeing Westinghouses remediation of the site, following CERCLA guidelines (not on NPL, nor is it a Superfund site) Plant

Methods used for my Project Georeferanced a map from the DNR/ Westinghouse EE/CA with layers already in GIS format Plotted the coordinates of the wells Interpolated the values of TCE and PCE to estimated the location of the VOC plume
