2 OVER VIEW OF USEFULNESS OF NUCLEAR POWER AND ITS PROCESSES By Xavier Midgley

3 THE PROCESS OF NUCLEAR POWER There are 2 types of nuclear energy: nuclear fission involves the splitting of the nuclei of fissile fuels that have large atoms, such as isotopes uranium 235 and plutonium nuclear fusion involves the joining of the nuclei of small atoms such as isotopes hydrogen 2 and hydrogen 3 Fission is more commercially viable at the moment but fusion is still in research

4 USEFULNESS OF NUCLEAR POWER It has the highest energy density out of all available resources to us as shown by this table This means that you can get a lot of energy out of little of the resource making it very productive and you can transport more energy by using nuclear instead of things like fossil fuels Energy density category Energy resources Very highNuclear fusion Nuclear fission highhydrogen Fossil fuels mediumWood hep LowSolar

5 WHY WE DON’T USE MUCH NUCLEAR POWER Numbers of factors that have limited the growth of nuclear power:  the technology is very complex so it’s difficult to use in less technologically advanced societies. Ledc don’t have tech to make nuclear plants yet so they use fossil fuels  the complex technology makes it expensive  there is strong opposition to nuclear power in some countries. Some countries see it as dangerous and associate it with nuclear weapons  uncertainty over long term disposal of radioactive waste  uncertainty over the total cost of decommissioning them we don’t know the cost of this because we haven’t decommissioned any yet
