Core Physics – Energy L/O :- To be able to research and present the possible hazards of using mobile phones “Should you really be ‘glued’ to that phone?” Exam Date -

Quick Quiz - What do you remember from last lesson? Write out the electromagnetic spectrum from longest to shortest Which are the most dangerous EM waves? What can they cause? What is the equation for working out the speed of a wave? What happens to a light ray when it travels from air through glass? Why does this happen? What is diffraction? What are the 2 different types of wave? Give an example How do you work out the pay-back time for insulation? What are the pros and cons of wind energy? How does increasing the volume of a sound affect the wave?

Today we want to do an experiment with mobile phones but we must think of the safety issues involved Mobile phone use microwaves to send information to satellites. What could the possible health affects of this be ? It is suggested that aluminium can help to prevent the heating effects of the microwaves

End TASK You are going to be given an article to read about the possible dangers of using mobile phones. You will need to present the information from the article to the class and you will be grading on your presentation skills

You will be graded on Content  Was the information clear?  Did they provide a summary at the end?  Did they suggest how reliable their source was? Presentation  Did they explain the information? (not read it from a sheet)  Were they sensible?  Could you hear them easily? Visual Aids  Were the visual aids clear?  Did they help you understand the information?

Grading CriteriaGroup Number (Give a mark out of 5 for each section) Content Was the information clear? Did they provide a summary at the end? Did discuss the reliability of the resource? Visual Aids Were they clear? Did they help you understand the info Presentation Did they explain the information (not read) Were they sensible Could you hear them easily? TOTAL (out of 40) GRADE

So if mobile phones can affect sperm count, can you design a pair a safety pants?

What have you learnt? Do you know what the possible health risks are of using mobile phones?
