Who is Most Likely to Get This Disorder? Cleft Palate X-Linked is most common in the Asian ethnicity and some of the American Indian race. ◦ Not as common within the African American ethnic group. Cleft Palate is more common amongst males than females.

Symptoms of Cleft Palate X-Linked Depending on the level of severity of the Cleft, the symptoms may as follow: Difficulties in breathing Severe ear infections or hearing loss Feeding may be more difficult for those with a Cleft Palate Complications in developing speech Dental problems and cavities may be a sign of a cleft palate as well.

How Common is This Disorder? Approximately1 out of every 1,000 people are born with a Cleft Palate

Is the Disorder Deadly? Will it Shorten Lifespan? Cleft Palate is not a deadly disorder, nor will it shorten ones life span. It is just an external defect where the lip did not fuse together as it normally does. It may cause brutal ear infections that may lead to hearing loss, or it can also cause breathing problems which may worsen over time

Can You Be Tested for the Disorder? If so, How and When? A physical examination of the mouth, nose, and palate confirms a cleft lip or cleft palate. Medical tests may be done to rule out other possible health conditions ( +lip+and+palate) +lip+and+palate This diagnosis can take place as early as birth of a child

Is There Treatment? Does it Cure or Treat Symptoms? Surgery between the ages of six and nine months is suggested so proper speech development will occur This does typically cure the symptoms.
