What is a species?

Can you define biodiversity?

Biodiversity Biodiversity is... the total variation that exists among all living things on Earth. It includes variation found between different species and variation found within the same species.

Niche An organism’s ecological niche is... the role that it plays within a community (e.g Mole in underground burrow or brown trout in fresh water).

Biodiversity Biodiversity within an ecosystem refers to the range of species present within that ecosystem’s community.

Adaptations can involve the structure of the organisms body others depend on the way in which the organism behaves in response to environmental stimuli. A species is only able to settle into an ecological niche and prosper if it is well adapted to that way of life.

Distribution

Questions 1.Define the term species. 2.Explain what is meant by the term fertile offspring 3.When a lion is crossed with a tiger, the result is a sterile tiglon. Are a tiglon’s parents from the same species? Explain your answer. 4.Give the meaning of the terms biodiversity, habitat, ecological niche and adaptation. 5.Choose one species and state why it is well adapted to its environment.
