Dating in the Digital Age Sociology Chapter 24: Social Change: Traditional, Modern, and Postmodern Societies Society: The Basics Chapter 16: Social Change: Modern and Postmodern Societies

A major part of the social life of young people has always involved what is generally called “dating.” A recent survey using a sample of U.S. teens between the ages of thirteen and seventeen provides some insights into how dating is evolving in the digital age.

Most teen dating relationships do not start online. They begin with face-to-face encounters, just as has been the case in the past.

Have you ever used social media to let someone know you were attracted to them? Flirted with them in person? How often do you send text messages to your boyfriend, girlfriend, or significant other?

If you want to ask someone out on a date, would you wait for him or her to ask you first? Have you ever un- friended or blocked someone who was flirting with you in a way that made you feel uncomfortable ?

In what ways does dating appear to be the same in the digital age? In what ways does it appear to differ? Does your dating experience seem consistent with the results of the survey presented here? Explain. Discussion Questions
