Goals for the video Share information regarding the draft NYSSLS Provide a shared understanding to facilitate collegial discussions

Draft NYSSLS Released 11/19/15 Started with the NGSS 2013 Survey to compare NGSS to current standards First edits made by Preliminary Draft Standards Writing Team Reviewed by Science Education Steering Committee Second round of edits made by Science Standards Writing Team

Creation of NGSS A Framework for Science Education –NRC 2011 –Written by 18 Individuals (2 Nobel laureates, science education researchers, cognitive scientists, and policy experts) –Four teams representing each science discipline –Identified the goals of the NGSS based on research of how students learn science

Creation of NGSS

Draft NYSSLS Adopted the topical arrangement 14 new PEs K-HS 9 PEs for Pre-K Altered approximately 30 PEs –SED did not mark these clearly Various changes to DCI (insertions, deletions, and partial edits)

Generalizations More changes in middle and high school. Earth and Space Science has the least amount of changes There are some changes that alter the PE significantly No noted changes to science & engineering practices or cross-cutting concepts. The three dimensionality of the NGSS remains –This will require a significant shift K-12

Why New Standards It has been over two decades since last national standards Current New York State Standards are from 1996 Science permeates vast aspects of our world Students need to fundamentally understand core phenomena to make decisions in their future. –Students need cognitive abilities to evaluate, use and continue to learn about science Confront the current facts: –Why is present science education not supporting students in their future?

Introduction to the Framework A very brief introduction to A Framework for K-12 Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (NRC, 2012) When watching video think about:video Why do we need new standards? What is different about the new standards?

Key Aspects of the Framework Science for ALL students Learning progression Coherent and cohesive K-12 learning experience Focused on a core set of cross cutting concepts, disciplinary core ideas, and scientific and engineering practices (three stands completely integrated) –NOT focused on discrete facts Instruction focused on understanding essential phenomena (not teaching topics) –“The NGSS require a much deeper understanding of the phenomena as opposed to the memorization of the vocabulary alone.” (Pruitt, 2014, p. 154).

Three Dimensional Standards Disciplinary Core Ideas – core knowledge in each of the science disciplines Crosscutting Concepts – bridge all disciplines of science Science and Engineering Practices – cognitive, social, and physical practices scientists engage in These three dimensions are fully integrated

Reading the Standards

Survey Released Dec. 8 th and will be open until Feb. 5 th Criteria referenced survey Four focus areas (total of 43 questions) –Organization of standards –Coherence –Clarity and specificity –Content and rigor One question for general feedback One question for general comments about implementation

Reviewing the Draft NYSSLS Copies of draft NYSSLS Comparison document Spend 10 – 15 minutes reviewing the documents Note any of the following: –Things you expected to see –Unexpected things –Concerns –Things you are excited about

Focus questions In groups of 3-4 discuss and chart the following –How will these standards change the K-12 science learning opportunities? (include evidence) –What instruction and system changes must occur to support these standards? –What concerned you? –What should we be excited about?

What is the take away? With your small table group share and develop your elevator speech about the draft NYSSLS. –You can develop one for the group or individual ones. We will share these.

Before you leave What questions do you still have? – me so that I can answer them directly or use as basis of the next video Ideas for how OCM BOCES Center for Innovative Science Education can support our movement forward towards new standards.
