Microscope Notes

Eye Piece

Also called the Ocular The part of the microscope you look through to see an image. The eye piece magnifies what you are looking at 10 X’s

Eye Piece Arm Base

Arm and Base The arm and base are used to hold the microscope. You should always use two hands one on the arm and one under the base.

Eye Piece Arm Base Coarse Adj.

Coarse Adjustment The coarse adjustment knob is used to ‘find’ an object. It is the first adjustment you use to focus on an object. This may not make the image clear-- it only lets you see that there is something there.

Eye Piece Arm Base Coarse Adj. Fine Adj.

Fine Adjustment The fine adjustment knob ‘fine tunes’ what you are looking at. You use this knob after the coarse adjustment to make the image more clear.

Eye Piece Arm Base Coarse Adj. Fine Adj. Objectives

The objectives are used to magnify what you are looking at. There are 3 objectives High power : 40X’s magnification Medium power: 10X’s magnification Low power: 4X’s magnification

Total Magnification To determine total magnification you must multiply the eye piece by the objective. Low Power 10 X 4 = 40X (total magnification) 10 X 10 = 10 X 40 =

Eye Piece Arm Base Coarse Adj. Fine Adj. Objectives Stage

This is where you put the object to be viewed. We will use slides with object on them, so the slide will be place on the stage with the object directly over the hole in the stage.

Eye Piece Arm Base Coarse Adj. Fine Adj. Objectives Stage Diaphragm

Used to adjust the amount of light that comes through the stage.
