Chapter 3 Creation

Creation To Create = To make out of nothing ◦ “Let there be light” (Gen 1:3) God wanted the universe to exist, and so it does

The Creation story Originally part of the oral tradition of the Jewish people Three reasons for doing so ◦ To show that there is only one God, and that He is the creator of all  Pagans believed in many gods who created different elements of the world ◦ God created the world in an orderly way and out of love  Some pagans believed that the world was created out of the destruction stemming from a war between the gods  Accidental creation ◦ Everything created by God is good  Many pagans believed there were evil gods who created bad things

Genesis God created the world God created man: Adam ◦ Adam means “man” From Adam, God created Eve ◦ Eve means “mother of the living” Man given dominion over the earth

Human Person Has both body and soul ◦ Body (physical) = mortal ◦ Soul (spiritual) = immortal Soul has two elements ◦ Intellect (ability to think, reason, know right from wrong) ◦ Will (allows us to choose freely) Both elements are important All men are equal because all men have these elements ◦ Not because everyone is exactly the same

Angels Created by God as well Pure spirits ◦ Intelligent beings ◦ Without bodies like us Lucifer led rebellion ◦ Refused to love God freely and obey His commands ◦ Pride was Satan's downfall ◦ Sent to Hell, along with all the fallen angels Faithful angels were victorious in the battle ◦ Led by Michael the Archangel ◦ 9 Choirs of angels ◦ Guardian angels

Fall of Man Adam and Eve tempted by the serpent in the Garden of Eden ◦ Were told they would be just like God if they ate the forbidden fruit ◦ Eve ate it first ◦ Gave it to Adam, who then ate of it Original Sin ◦ Lost sanctifying grace ◦ Experienced shame ◦ Would experience suffering, sickness, and death ◦ Passed on to the whole human race ◦ Has affected all human beings except Jesus and Mary

The Plan Forms… God still loved man ◦ Was sad that they lost His life in their souls (sanctifying grace) Promised to send a Redeemer ◦ Redeemer would be born of a woman ◦ Would conquer the serpent once and for all
