John Milton’s Paradise Lost By Ben Hyatt, Marvin Bennett, and Kenny Dustin

Summary of Paradise Lost Satan waged a war on God and lost. The fallen angels built Pandemonium and were discussing if they should stay at war or not. They resolved to a different plan at revenge by using Earth and man. At the gates of hell Satan meets his children Sin and Death. They unbar the gates after Satan and Death fight. He ventures in space until he views the new universe. He found the angel Uriel and in disguise, got into Earth. God views Satan and prophesies the fall of man. His son, the Messiah, offers to sacrifice himself for them.

Summary of Paradise Lost Cont. Satan gets to Eden and becomes jealous of Adam and Eve. Uriel tells his fellow angels, and they apprehend and banish Satan. God sends Raphael to warn Adam and Eve. He tells them of how Lucifer’s jealousy against Jesus started a war in heaven. He also speaks of how Jesus forced Satan and his ranks to hell. He tells Adam man was made to replace the fallen angels. Satan came back to Earth as a serpent and tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. Adam, not wanting to lose Eve, also ate the fruit.

Summary of Paradise Lost Cont. They lost their innocence and became blaming to each other. Jesus came and judged them, delaying their deaths. When Satan returned to Pandemonium, the other angels and he are turned into serpents. Michael escorts them out of Paradise after showing Adam everything that will happen before the death and resurrection of the Son of God

Character Sketch: Adam Adam was the first human and man, and was created by God Adam was the first human to enter the Garden of Eden. Eve, a creation meant for Adam, was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Eve then ate a fruit and in order to gain knowledge and in order to remain with Eve Adam ate the fruit as well. Adam, along with man, was punished for eating the fruit.

Character Sketch: Satan Satan is also referred to as the devil, and is a fallen angel. He is vengeful as God disowned him, and to this day he holds anger towards God. He holds a spear as a weapon. He has wings as he was once an angel. Satan shows himself as a snake when he tricks Eve into eating the fruit.

The history behind Paradise Lost In the seventeenth century, John Milton was a poet and political activist. He wrote pamphlets and other pieces of writing that went against the Anglican church and King Charles. In his day Milton's political views were not allowed so when he recorded them on paper he was jailed for some time. Milton became blind by the time he started writing Paradise Lost in the late 1650's.
