Presentation transcript:

World Religions What are the 5 major religions of the world? Two of the five were founded in the same region. Can you name the two and the region? What do the terms polytheistic and monothestic mean?

The Semitic Religions Judaism, Islam and Christianity all make up the Semitic religions. Describes the people who came from the Middle East (and their languages). Christianity is Semitic because it originated in the Middle East Monotheism Jerusalem is sacred to all Semitic religions

The First Amendment The first article of the Bill of Rights stating that “Congress shall make no laws respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting free exercise thereof…” The United States was to have NO official religion.

Belief, Fact, Opinion Fact: can be proved true Opinion: statement/idea that tells how a person feels about something Belief: an idea/conviction that someone accepts as true or real (ex. walking under ladder is bad luck) Belief system: collection of ideas or teachings which influence a person’s understanding of life

Non-Religious Agnosticism is the position of believing that knowledge of the existence or non- existence of God is impossible. It does not deny the possibility of God’s existence

Irreligion Atheism: Denying the existence of God - Does not disrespect spirituality Theoretical atheism: accusations of being an atheist because they don’t believe in the same God that is accepted by the accusers
