3. Brainstorm: What makes a story “good”? Student responses: Subject? Surprise/A twist? Detail Pictures/chart/graph Video Structure Relevance – can readers relate to it? Is it current?

4. Communication Why do people communicate? What sorts of information do they share? How do media organizations help people communicate? What are the different roles within a media organization?

5. Need to know … The First Amendment: addition to the U.S. Constitution that provides a right to free speech and a free press Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

6. Need to know … Journalist: A person who gathers and reports the news Reporters, TV anchors, radio correspondents A person or who provides the financial, managerial, and technical support that is necessary to transmit the news Publishers, station owners, directors, camera operators

7. Need to know … Credibility: the belief that what someone says is true What helps credibility? How do you build it? What hurts credibility? How do you weaken it? Verify: to check for accuracy

8. Need to know … Objectivity: a lack of personal feelings or bias Can you completely get rid of bias? How do you deal with it? Is there a place for opinion in journalism? Commentary: a personal view offered in a radio or TV program

9. Practice Think about what you’ve done in Tiger Connect over the past two days. Write a story for the school paper about it. Aim for a story of three-quarters to one page. The six questions …

10. Practice Remember that the purpose is communication! Prioritize Explain … Opine? Know your audience What do they know? What don’t they know? How can you advance their understanding?

11. Getting to know you Make a brochure about yourself. Tell me: Your hobbies Five words that describe you An interesting fact about you Do you have a job? Do you have access to a computer at home? What do you know about journalism? What are your goals for this class? What are your post-graduation plans? Anything else you want me to know about you Be creative! (Think beyond the tri-fold!)
