Introduction Did you know there is a harbor seal named Popeye located in the Pacific Northwest? You would think this seal would be a male because of its name, but it really turned out to be a female! How do I know? I went on a family trip to San Juan Islands located in the state of Washington in summer On this trip, I found my new favorite animal, the harbor seal. This animal is so special on this island, they even have a statue dedicated to her. I am looking forward to telling you more about my favorite animal, the harbor seal.

Closing Paragraph Did you know there is a female harbor seal name Popeye! She is located in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle Washington. She can be found on a little island in Washington called Friday Harbor. Other family members of the harbor seal can be found off the New England Coast too! While they make a home in the water, they are considered mammals. The are warm blooded and have a huge piece of fat called blubber to keep them warm. They prefer the Arctic Marine coastlines that that these areas have to offer, but can be found as far south at San Diego, California. The harbor seal is a carnivore and like to feed upon fish such as anchovy, sea bass, herring, mackerel, cod, and occasionally upon shrimp, crabs, and squid. The are often found in the harbor in search of this food which is how they got their name. Once they are fed and find a mate, the female is known to have one live birth. The pups are capable of swimming and diving within hours of birth. They will be fed by the fatty milk of their mother for 4-6 months. Females can also out live males by up to 10 years! Harbor seals are hunted by killer whales (orcas), polar bears, sharks, walruses, eagles, and coyotes. Hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy the playfulness this animal has to offer, especially if you plan on visiting the coast this year! If you happen to be in Washington, at the harbor, be sure to tell Popeye hello!
