Holocaust Survivors Tell Their Stories of Childhood

Six million Jews were murdered by the Nazi’s Another five million non-Jews were also killed gay people, priests, gypsies, people with mental or physical disabilities, communists, trade unionists, Jehovah's Witnesses, anarchists, Poles and other Slavic peoples, and resistance fighters “If we held one minute of silence for every victim of the Holocaust, then we would be silent for eleven and a half years.” -Source unknown-

Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party created in the Third Reich the most extreme and terrifying example of a government controlling the people with complete power that the world has ever seen. How could this happen?

“A lie repeated a thousand times becomes the truth.” ~Joseph Goebbels Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945

A major factor in the Nazi’s effectiveness as a political force, was that not only did they ruthlessly deploy violence against those who disagreed with them, but they also utterly mastered the art of propaganda, fabricating a national ideology around their twisted beliefs.

As you watch and listen to the following video, pay attention to the different types of propaganda Hitler used. See how many of these you notice… bandwagon testimonials plain folks glittering generalities emotional appeal name calling fear

Hitler’s Propaganda Machine

The following slides are cartoons from Julius Streicher’s Der Sturmer, one of Hitler’s earliest followers. These cartoons were published in newspapers from 1923- 1945.

WW II started in 1939, some of the examples you will see were being published well before the war even started.

What is the “it” that should be strangled to death? Title: Don’t Let Go! Caption: Do not grow weary, do not loosen the grip, This poisonous serpent may not slip away. Better that one strangles it to death Than that our misery begin anew. March 1935 What is the “it” that should be strangled to death?

Title: Insatiable The lead article is on the Moscow show trials. The cartoon caption: “Far be it from the Jews to enslave a single people. Their goal is to devour the entire world.” October 1936 How do you think the author intended the readers to react/feel when they saw this cartoon or read this caption?

Title: One People, One Nation, One Leader! Poster of Hitler, 1938 How is Hitler portrayed in this picture? Why? There are six words in the caption and one is used three times. Why? http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/nazi_propaganda_gallery_03.shtml

Title: The Land of Freedom Caption: The cartoon caption: “Where one is ruled by the Jews, freedom is only an empty dream.” July 1939 Look closely at the picture.. Who is stepping on the back of the man in the newspaper?

The Poisonous Mushroom The Poisonous Mushroom or Der Giftpilz was a book written for children. Why would someone write a book like this for children?

Discussion Could something like this happen again? How do we recognize propaganda? How does a person know what to believe? What is true and what isn’t? How would YOU decide whom to follow?
